The first artificial satellite of an India: Aryabhata

The first artificial satellite developed by ISRO: Aryabhatta
  • Aryabhata is India's first indigenous satellite, It was completely designed and fabricated by India and launched by Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket.
  • Aryabhata was launched with the assistance of the Soviet Union on 19th April 1975 from Kapustin Yar.
  • The satellite is named after the 5th century CE mathematician and astronomer Aryabhatta.
  • Aryabhata was built to conduct experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomics and solar physics.
  • Although its life was fixed for six month but power failure halted experiment after 4 days in orbit.

Achievements:

  • First Made in India satellite is launched in space.
  • Aryabhata made observations on an X-ray source possible and helped to establish basic infrastructure for building and testing satellites.
  • It also helped India to generate the basic manpower skill for satellite building.
